How a Factory Works

Synopsis
Describes how cooker-maker Leisure Consumer Products brought in a new production process and a new way of working. Design - product development, design and marketing have been integrated, so that new products can be designed, redesigned and developed faster than ever before. Lean production - at the core of the changes is ‘lean production’ by concentrating all the efforts of the factory on producing finished products while minimising anything superfluous to those efforts. Just In Time - minimal stocks are carried and, ideally, the material is delivered just before it is needed for use. Not everything in the factory works in this way and the more traditional approach, known as batch production, still applies. The workforce - the success or failure of the new approach depends critically on the workforce being enthusiastic about the new methods.
