Synopsis
1: Introduces the four-part series with a short summary of the social context of the British newsreels, including photographs of contemporary cinemas and figures for cinema attendances, followed by a complete newsreel - Gaumont British for 30 March 1939. Lecturers are Nicholas Pronay and Peter Wenham.
2: Brings together various newsreel stories about the marches of the unemployed in the 19302 and the official responses to the crisis. Lecturer is Professor Arthur Marwick.
3: How the British newsreels’ treatment of Nazi Germany altered during the 1930s, from stressing Hitler’s legitimacy and the Christianity of the Nazis to the bitter response noted in the final stories. Lecturer is Professor J A S Grenville.
4: The British newsreels’ coverage of war preparations, interspersed with government propaganda, at the end of the 1930s. Lecturer is Dr R A C Parker.
Accompanying 32-page booklet contains an introductory essay, detailed comments on the newsreel material, a transcript of the soundtrack and a bibliography.
