History of Art, The (6 Parts)

Synopsis
A series chronicling the development and history of art from medieval times to the 20th-century, with analysis and interpretation by Chris Muir and Dr George Speake.
1: The flourishing of secular art under the wing of the medieval Church. Examines the works by Giotto, Massaccio and the Limbourgs brothers.
2: How the Renaissance brought a new spontaneity; depth and colour were reflected in great works such as Michelangelo’s Sistine chapel ceiling and Titian’s ‘Assumption of the Virgin’.
3: The development of the Baroque and two very different approaches to painting: realism and the Classical discipline. Includes the work of Rembrandt, Rubens and Velazquez.
4: The 18th-century taste for decoration and elegance developed into the Rococo style. Features the works of Watteau, Chardin and Hogarth.
5: The backlash against Rococo can be seen in the work of Goya, Gericault and Delacroix, while in Britain Turner and Constable pioneered Romantic landscape art.
6: The Impressionist and Post-Impressionist painters; features the work of Monet, Renoir, Cezanne, Seurat and Van Gogh.
