- Synopsis
- 1: Shows some of the earliest forms of advertising show merchants and craftsmen displayed signs/symbols to sell their wares to London’s largely illiterate population.
2: Looks at the bold, brash advertisements and the outrageous claims that emerged with the coming of industrialisation in Britain and at how the demand for products had to be created.
3: Illustrated with posters by Goya, Toulouse Lautrec and others whose designs caught the eye in the interests of commerce. The Pirelli Girls, Pear’s Soap, Coleman’s Mustard and Guinness Beer advertisements are shown. Part 4 looks at how advertising uses positive psychology to appeal to the public eg. patriotism in ‘Your Country Needs You’ poster. Successful ads from the USA are also illustrated (Pepsodent, Gillette, Lucky Strike).
