Higher Control of Reflex Activity

Synopsis
Supraspinal control of reflexes and relation to voluntary movement, clinical significance of the above, pathways controlling the stretch reflex. Position and functional significance of the internal capsule, pathways and synapses of the pyramidal (corticospinal) and of some main extrapyramidal tracts. Experimental ‘preparations’ used to study control of posture and movement, brief explanation of their behaviour and its application to the effects of lesions in man. The effects of a haemorrhage into the region of the internal capsule, spinal shock, spastic paralysis, clonus, clasp-knife response, superficial reflexes, normal plantar response. Babinski response, abdominal reflex, effects of cerebellar lesions and of Parkinsonism.
