Hidden Side of the Algarve, The

Synopsis
Looks at the promotion of rural redevelopment in the hinterland of the Algarve. Concentrates on a largely EC-funded RADIAL project in Portugal, in which a team of educationalists based at the University of Faro worked with people from the remote mountain villages to empower them to establish new businesses. Since the project ended the work has continued with new funding and a wider brief as the LEADER programme. The underlying philosophy has always been that people should be in control of their own lives and that external team members should at all times work with the villagers to enable then to decide upon and to implement their needs; there is a clear intention to avoid patronising and telling people what they need and how they can go about achieving their objectives.

Notes
NB. As of May 2016 Open University Worldwide are no longer distributing DVDs. They have posted this message on their website: ‘Unfortunately Open University Worldwide Limited has decided that product sales are no longer viable given the reduced funding to Higher Education institutions and diminishing demand for the products we have traditionally stocked. At present the Open University Students Association (OUSA) will continue to sell the "Good Study Guide", and we are in discussion with other possible distributors to continue to make The Open University’s products available for purchase. As soon as we have any information on other channels of distribution we will update this notice’. Some products are still available via second hand dealers on Amazon.co.uk
