Herzberg discusses his methods and motivations in spectroscopic research. Gives an elementary historical outline of emission/absorption spectroscopy from Newton to the grating spectrograph. A brief mention is made of applications to molecular structure, astronomy and free radical (e.g. carbon hydroxide) spectra.
