Synopsis
Part 1 (13 min): Explains how hereditary diseases can be passed on,and how cystic fibrosis can lead to digestive, nutritional and respiratory difficulties. Looks at symptoms and diagnosis of cystic fibrosis, and explains treatment to manage and relieve symptoms: medication and physiotherapy. Looks at current life expentancy.
Part 2 (13 min): Descibes muscular dystrophy and its various forms: Duchenne, myotonic and other rarer forms, and explains the inheritance of the disease. Examines symptoms and characteristics of each form in turn. Shows diagnosis and discusses treatment: alleviation rather than cure from various specialists. Looks at current research for a possible cure.
Part 3 (13 min): Shows the disease hereditary spinal ataxia in two typical patients: one aged 12 and one in his early 40s. Describes the initial onset of the disease and its symptoms and characteristics. Explains how the muscle inco-ordination is caused by three interrelated syndromes: posterior radicular, cerebellar and pyramidal syndrome. Looks ar research for a possible cure.
