Synopsis

Peter Hollindale, University of York, and Gareth Lloyd Evans, University of Birmingham, discuss the play. They consider Shakespeare’s dramatisation of historical process and of the psychology of a diverse and complete society alongside individual figures and central relationships. The decline and rejection of Falstaff are seen in the wider context of sickness and dissolution. Henry IV himself is seen as another focus of these concerns, and tragic and ironic elements in his character are discussed. Side 2 comprises readings by actors Martin Harvey, Knight Mantell and George Taylor.
