Health
- Synopsis
- Three 8-minute films: 1) FIGHTING AIDS: The thriving industrial town of Verkhnaya Salda has been devastated by an AIDS epidemic. Economic crisis has led to the total collapse of social welfare systems and the closure of hospitals and health centres, leaving only a few AIDS victims to take on the massive task of education, treatment and rehabilitation; 2) THE TWILIGHT DANCE: Set in an old people’s dance hall in Kiev, investigates why there are so many more old women than men, and why the life expectancy of men in the Ukraine has fallen so drastically over the last ten years, and continues to fall; 3) HOME FROM HOSPITAL: Follows the work of an Hungarian midwife, the first to operate outside the state system, who is publicly attacked and maligned by other doctors for her campaign to give pregnant women the choice of home deliveries rather than giving birth in Hungary’s understaffed, dehumanising state hospitals.
