Synopsis
Traces the unbroken chain between consumer product and the production, transport, treatment and disposal of associated waste products. Summarises legislation including the changes brought about by the introduction of Section 17 of the Control of Pollution Act. Defines responsibilities of the parties involved in waste disposal and the connection between UK legislation and EEC directives indicated with particular reference to the controls over the transfrontier shipments of waste triggered off by the dioxin episode of Seveso. Discusses disposal from re-use and recovery of solvents and oils to landfill - with or without pretreatment, chemical fixation and incineration. Describes in each case the underlying principles of the method of operation. Deals with controls over hazardous waste disposal and discusses the question of registration of producers and licensing of handlers. Shows the production of methane from landfilled waste used to fire a brick kiln is shown.
