Hamar Trilogy, The (3 Parts)

Synopsis
The Hamar people are an isolated people living in the dry scrubland of south-western Ethiopia. These programmes concentrate on the proud and outspoken Hamar women.
1 (1990): A young widow, an unmarried girl and a senior co-wife, although living a very different lifestyle from women in the West, share many of the same concerns about marriage, pregnancy, men and growing old.
2 (1991): Although no Hamar girl would want to remain unmarried, her wedding day is the saddest of her life. Two betrothed girls must leave their families forever to marry men they have never met. One is secretely exited but her young cousin dreads the day when she will have to leave home to start a new life amongst strangers. Meanwhile, the future husbands discuss women, cattle and beating their wives.
3 (1994): Three years after the girl Duka left home to marry, she has two children and her husband’s ambitions are thwarted by the drought, rising prices, and demands from relatives. Duka’s cousin in his coming-of-age ritual has to must leap over his cattle while Duka is ritually beaten until her back bleeds. But a sudden death in the family interrupts and the cousin must find a way to help save the day.
