- Synopsis
- Explains computer software security concepts by using analogies with the defences of Deal Castle in Kent. Tells of the Internet ‘worm’ virus of 1988, which disabled hundreds of computers world-wide and demonstrated the necessity of protecting computers from intruders. Discusses encryption, password security, and attacks by hackers, including the ‘virus’, the ‘Trojan horse’ and the ‘worm’. Discusses firewalls and gives practical advice for getting help with identifying security problems and implementing solutions. Explains the role of computer emergency response teams (CERT) in policing the Internet and notes that computer hacking is a crime that is liable to by heavily punished.
