Green Challenge, The

Synopsis
Examines key environmental issues facing manufacturing companies all over the world. At the Rio Earth Summit the world came up with an action plan for ‘sustainable development’, but to make this plan work companies have to make radical changes. A major challenge is cleaning up production; this is illustrated by the problems of water pollution caused by a tannery in Columbia and a paper mill in Scotland. Shows that greener products can bring competitive advantage, with an example of a Swiss-manufactured glue. Meeting the green challenge has to be considered in the context of the communities in which companies work and the impact of the local people, using examples from Senegal, the former Soviet Union and South America. Concludes that sustainable development requires widespread collaboration among all sectors of society, including manufacturers.
