Greatest Paper in the World, The
- Synopsis
- Surveys the history of ‘The Times’ from the early influential editors to the strike in the late 1970s. The second half of the programme concentrates on Rupert Murdoch’s policies in running a paper and the effect his approach has on staff at home and abroad. Concern for the paper’s political independence led to the resignation of its editor Harold Evans; feature writers now have to cater for a more general readership and the trade unions have had to come to terms with new technology agreements. The message is that ‘The Times’ is no longer the great institution it once was.
