Great Hunting Debate, The: The Issue That Won’t Go Away

Synopsis
Highlights the debate on ‘The Wild Mammals Protection Bill’ presented by Labour MP Kevin McNamara in February 1992, which would have made it a criminal act to hunt stags and foxes and snare wild mammals. The issue was passionately debated, with the arguments against blood sports coming from all parties. The proposed ban on fox-hunting in particular also provoked strong feelings from those at both ends of the political spectrum, who saw a threat to one of the great English rural pursuits, and to individual freedom.
