Graham Sutherland

Synopsis
Sutherland outlines the major developments in his art, his early enthusiasm for engraving and the influence of Samuel Palmer; his response to the landscape of Pembrokeshire in the 1930s and the reasons for his return there in the ‘60s and ‘70s; his move to the south of France in search of colour and light; his religious commissions and his reasons for undertaking the controversial portraits. Of the portraits he says ‘I don’t seek rich people’ but he admits to being fascinated by ‘the gloss of power’. He talks at length about the qualities he seeks in natural forms, a major preoccupation in his work.
