Governance and Society
- Synopsis
- Three 8-minute films: 1) ELECTION FEVER: Follows the run-up to the election in Slovakia in September 1998, showing heated rallies in East Slovakia and Bratislave and examining some of the main election issues, including privatisation and control of the media; 2) ONE TOWN, TWO COUNTRIES: Looks at the fate of Narva/Ivangorod, a settlement literally split down the middle by the border between Estonia and Russia. The families themselves are also divided: the Estonians cannot forget that their Russian neighbours were formerly occupiers, while the Russians are openly nostalgic for the old Soviet empire; 3) CHERNOBYL CHAPLAIN: Follows the ministry of 27-year-old Orthodox priest Father Varlaam in his parish just inside the contaminated zone surrounding the stricken Chernobyl power station.
