Global Sea Levels

Synopsis: To measure mean sea level, the effects of tides and weather must be accurately known and the effects of land movements and ice cover can dominate local measurements. Uncertainties about future rates of rise in sea level are addressed by looking at fluxes of carbon to the deep sea (Joint Global Ocean Flux Study) and by direct monitoring of sea level changes with tidal gauges, bottom pressure recorders and satellite altimentry. It is not yet known if the greenhouse effect is causing sea level to rise more rapidly.
