Gene Hunters
- Synopsis
- Scientists are collecting blood samples from the Ahuaco and Asario Indians who live in the remote rain forests of northeern Columbia in order to provide DNA for the Human Genome Biodiversity Project. The aim is to gather and store the genetic blueprint of 700 pure-blooded tribal peoples before they become extinct or lose their unique genetic makeup through intermarriage. A inherent problem is that the genetic material may benefit science and medicine without helping the native communities.
