Fuzzy Logic As a Calculus of Similarities and Preferences

Synopsis
An application of fuzzy logic techniques to design a reactive controller for an autonomous robot. Includes a discussion of the formal theoretical foundations upon which the controller is based and video clips showing actual runs of the robot in an indoor environment. These clips illustrate controller behaviour, robot motion, the dynamic state of the robot’s sensory information, and the dynamic state of the controller showing the factors leading to the choice of particular control actions. Teaches how to apply concepts from utility-theory in connection with fuzzy logic and how to design a reactive controller that guides a complex system through a dynamic, uncertain environment, and teaches the basic principles behind the successful construction of fuzzy controllers.
