Future of Genetics, The
- Synopsis
- Looks at possible advances in genetics over the next decade and the consequent ethical dilemmas. Suggests that the technology will soon be in place to analyse in minute detail all the genes responsible for the structure and function of a human being, making it possible to predict the likelihood of susceptibility to various diseases and to intervene in novel ways to prevent them. Advances in genetic screening will also enable the creation of so-called ‘designer babies’ with characteristics that prospective parents deem desirable, and it may even be possible to clone a human being from a single adult cell.
