Free Cinema

Synopsis
Three short documentary films about British working-class life produced by the ‘Free Cinema’ movement. The compilation consists of EVERY DAY EXCEPT CHRISTMAS, WE ARE THE LAMBETH BOYS, and THE SATURDAY MEN.
1: (d. Lindsay Anderson, 1957, 40 min). A personal view of Covent Garden market from midnight to mid-day, Director Lindsay Anderson’s describes the film as ‘a lyrical documentary’ - an attempt to bring poetry and humanity back into documentary film-making, and to break with the technical-informational-travelogue tradition that had made documentary synonymous with dullness and conformity.
2: (d. Karel Reisz, 1959, 50 min). A portrait of members of a South London youth club, at home, at work and at the club itself.
3: (d. John Fletcher, 1962, 29 min). Looks at the West Bromwich Albion football club, showing the life of a professional football player.
