Frederick the Great and Sans Souci
- Synopsis
- Frederick the Great ruled Prussia from his newly-built palace, Sans Souci, in Potsdam. Built to his own design, the building reveals much about the character of Frederick, who wanted to be seen as an ‘enlightened’ ruler-philosopher. The small, lavishly decorated palace includes a library, music room, guest wing, but no chapel (reflecting Frederick’s views on religious freedom), along with gardens with busts of Roman emperors, statues and a Chinese teahouse, and the significance of these elements within the overall design is examined. The program contrasts the image of Frederick as a man of letters, philosopher, musician and friend of the Enlightenment, with his position as an aristocratic ruler whose foreign policy included the 18th-century equivalent of a world war.
