Synopsis
Archive film, historic documents and re-enactments show the development of the treatment of congestive heart failure, starting with the Roman use of squill, and on to powdered toadskin in ancient China, bleeding and cupping in 18th-century Europe, and finally to rational drug therapy in modern times. Notes especially Withering and his use of foxgloves in the 1770s. The modern use of drugs is reviewed, and Karl Swedburg describes the life-saving importance of ACE inhibitors.
