Foxgloves in Medicine

Synopsis
A patient with mild congestive heart failure is seen before and after treatment with digoxin. A severe case of congestive heart failure with auricular fibrillation received digoxin intravenously and is also seen after treatment.
Early uses of the foxglove - the work of Withering and Mackenzie and the discovery of the value of digitalis in auricular fibrillation.
The chemical constitution of the crystalline glycosides in the leaf of ‘Digitalis purpurea’ - the discovery of digoxin in the leaf of ‘Digitalis Ianata’. Industrial production of digoxin. The pharmacological action of digoxin is demonstrated on the isolated rabbit heart, rabbit auricles and the frog heart. Its therapeutic value in congestive heart failure is indicated.
