Formica Aquilonia (A Study of Wood Ants in the Knapdale Forest on the West Coast of Scotland)

Synopsis
Examines the distribution of the ‘Rufa’ group in Europe and then identifies the areas colonised by those species found in the UK. General anatomy, caste differences, nest structures and environments introduce a discussion of behaviour within the nest, annual cycle, brood care, hunting and general foraging. Deals with some of the guests to be found within ant nest colonies and emphasis is also placed on the ant as a predator and its potential role as a means of biological pest control in the forest environment. Underlines the need for much research to be undertaken if the wood ant is to be protected and utilised.
