Synopsis

Examines a wide range of folk theatre, traditional seasonal customs and entertainments in Russia: the wandering minstrels, the revels for Christmas and Shrovetide; the great fairs; performing bears; the peasant wedding; puppet shows including Petrushka and the Vertep (Nativity plays), the ‘Boat’, and ‘Tzar Maximilian’. Few of the illustrations have previously been seen outside Russia.
