Fog of War, The

Synopsis
Looks at the history, use, tactics and ethics of chemical warfare. Used in World War 1, phosgene and mustard gas produced such revulsion that their first use was banned in 1925, but 20 countries still possess them. They were used against Ethiopian civilians in 1936, and in the Iran/Iraq war against the Kurds. Napalm, a form of environmental chemical warfare, was used in Vietnam. Nerve gases were first produced in Germany in 1937 but neither side was prepared to risk chemical warfare in WW2 - only soldiers can be protected against the deadliest of nerve agents such as taburn, sarin, soman, VX and leursite compounds. Looks at the current situation in the USA and USSR and at negotiations in Geneva for international regulation. and at the reasons for the failure to achieve a total ban or where a partial ban has been agreed, to destroy existing stocks.
