Five Sculptors

Synopsis
Series looking at five contemporary British sculptors.
1: Anthony Gormley uses his own body as a mould for his sculptures, which are then covered in fibreglass and lead. Show his sculpture ‘Mind and Body’ in the making, looks at some of his earlier work and visits a foundry where his first complete work in iron is being cast.
2: Since the Tate Gallery bought ‘Twin-Tub with Guitar’ in 1982, Bill Woodrow’s raw material is the detritus of consumer life - with handshears and pliers he creates bizarre images from the surface metal of household appliances and car bonnets to create complex and darkly humorous sculptures. Shows his work from early student experiments to major recent pieces.
3: Alison Wilding who is recognised as one of Britain’s leading sculptors, is seen stuck at a ‘psychological hill’, a difficulty she encounters with every sculpture. The film harts her progress through to the final work.
4: Richard Wentworth’s work includes sculptures made with light bulbs, baskets, bowls, ladles, mirrors and many other mundane objects. The film shows him at work in his studio and shopping for raw material, and visits his latest exibition in New York.
5: Anish Kapoor is known for his distinctive use of bright colours and seductive, almost totemistic shapes, which reflect the influence of his childhood in India. The film shows Kapoor at work in his studio, and follows him to the British Museum’s Indian sculpture, which has inspired him.
