Five per Cent and Philanthropy

Synopsis
Looks at the state of London’s housing in the early to mid-19th century and traces the efforts of Victorian philanthropists to provide improved dwellings. Housing was provided by Charitable Trusts, by City livery companies and by companies launched for the purpose of commercial philanthropy. Whilst the total accommodation provided could not cure the problem, these agencies set a standard of building that was later followed by local authority municipal housing.
