Describes and explains the basic concepts of transverse stability and stability criteria for fishing vessels in non-technical terms with illustrations using animation, ship models and full-size trawlers. Demonstrates the ‘roll period test’ for assessing the metacentric height and shows practical examples of ways by which stability can be degraded.
