Fishing at the Stone Weir

Synopsis
The series shows how life used to be among the Netsilik when they still lived apart and depended on the land and their own ingenuity to sustain life through the rigours of the Arctic year. The filming was done in the Pelly Bay region of the Canadian Arctic. In 2 parts: 1 (30 min): Skin tents are set up and fishing equipment prepared. The men carry stones and make enclosures to trap fish. A woman skins a duck, braids her hair and makes a balloon from a bladder. The men fish with three-pronged leisters, spearing the fish and stringing them on a thong. The woman works quickly, cleaning the catch, and everyone enjoys a bit of raw fish; 2 (27 min): The fishing continues. The plentiful catch is stored in stone caches after the women have cleaned it. Some of the fish is cooked in a stone pot.*
