First Americans, The

Synopsis
Until recently, it was accepted that although the rest of the world was populated as early as 40,000 years ago, the first evidence of human activity in the Americas only dated from the end of the Ice Age around 11,000 years ago, but this theory is challenged by evidence of sites dating much further back. In Meadowcroft, Pennsylvania, stone implements and fragments of human skull around 16,000 years old have been found in a rock shelter, and in the Pendejo Cave in Chile, artefacts which may be as much as 33,000 years old have been discovered. New theories take evidence from language, dental traits, and the genetic fingerprinting of native populations to trace the origins of the first Americans.
