Federico GarcÍa Lorca: The Poet and His Mission
- Alternative title
- Ian Gibson on Federico GarcÍa Lorca
- Synopsis
- A lecture by Ian Gibson given at Trinity College, Dublin, in April 1998 to mark the centenary of the birth of poet and dramatists Federico García Lorca. Gibson starts with Lorca’s identification with pre-1492 Granada and shows how this led Lorca to reject contemporary Granada, and the fatal consequences of this rejection. Gibson describes Lorca’s attachment to the Vega, the fertile plain outside Granada where he spent his childhood; his abilities as a pianist; his education; his burgeoning socialist sympathies; his dislike of institutionalised religion, his increasing awareness of his homosexuality; his meetings with Manuel de Falla; his early poems; his performing ability; the success of his ‘Gypsy Ballads’; his depresion and flight to New York; his return to spain and involvement in theatre and politics; his plays; his death at the hands of Fascists in a village outside Granada.
