Farmers of Gaho
- Synopsis
- All too often dry lands are dismissed as unproductive regions, with agriculture collapsing in the face of desertifiction. But this need not be so. In southern Ethiopia the farmers of the village of Gaho, faced with the constant threat of soil erosion and limited rainfall, have over generations developed unique farming techniques that have enabled them to acheive agricultural success in their arid environment. They work communally under the supervision of village elders to ensure the meticulous construction and maintenance of stone terraces and tie ridges that protect and conserve both the topsoil and rainfall.
