Faraday Lectures 1972: Part 1: History and Principles of Navigation, The: Dead Reckoning and Inertial Navigation

Subtitle
History and principles of navigation: dead reckoning and inertial navigation
Synopsis
Defines ‘navigation’ and shows how man developed methods of homing and how to determine latitude and longitude, using dead reckoning. Following Faraday’s discovery of electro-magnetic induction came the replacement of the compass by the gyroscope and, more recently, the devleopment of inertial navigaion and refinements in astronavigation. The presentation is dated (a filmed lecture) but includes interesting demonstrations of equipment, especially gyroscopes.
