Discussions in Bioethics: Family Tree

Synopsis
A short, open-ended drama designed to stimulate discussion of values and ethics in relation to modern medical technology. A single mother of three children who lives on welfare and has abused the children, is carrying an ectopic pregnancy and must be operated on quickly. The doctor is tempted to perform a tubal ligation without the patient’s consent, but the social worker acts to prevent this compulsory sterilisation on the grounds of illegality. The doctor argues that it is wrong to breed and abuse children.
