Synopsis
Tape 1: Professor Harold Brooks surveys the influences on and antecedents of Eliot’s drama of religious experience.
Tape 2 treats the character groupings of the play, and describes the story from three standpoints: Greek myth, psychological case history, and Christian conversion and discovery of true vocation.
Tape 3: The first of two talks on the merits of the play, dealing with the difficulties of dramas of religious experience, the imagery, Harry’s character, and the denouement.
Tape 4 discusses Eliot’s own criticism of his achievement.
