Family of Man, The (7 Parts)

Synopsis
A series of seven films comparing family life in five different locations. The communities selected are Andheri in the foothills of the Himalayas; Buk in the western highlands of New Guinea; Shakawe on the Okavango river in northern Botswana, Esher in Surrey and Colne in Lancashire. For the last programme, on death, a further location is added - the new Territories of Hong Kong, on the Chinese mainland.
Part 1: Marriage in the five communities: a wife with three husbands in the Himalayas, a husband with three wives in New Guinea, a married couple in Esher, another in Colne, and a man with two wives in Botswana. The film sets out to discover what, if anything, all these marriages have in common and how they differ.
Part 2: The relationship of mothers and children in the five communities and the part played by fathers in bringing up a family. Discusses education and preparation for adult life.
Part 3: The relationship between parents and teenagers; the generation gap and the problems of making the transition from child to adult; teenagers’ relationships with each other, especially with the opposite sex; love, courtship and romance.
Part 4: Weddings - similarities and differences in the ritual joining together of man and woman.
Part 5: Pregnancy and birth, and superstitions surrounding birth.
Part 6: Old age and the attitudes of the community towards old people.
Part 7: Attitudes and customs surrounding death.
