Fallen Arches: Load Tests on Masonry Arch Bridges

Synopsis
Shows load tests taken to collapse on eight brick and masonry arch bridges. The tests were carried out in order to study failure loads and modes of collapse of arch bridges, and thus to provide data for calibrating analytical models of the structural behaviour of arch bridges under traffic loads. Computer programs based on these models can then be used to assess traffic load capacity of the UK’s 40,000 arch bridges. Line loads were applied by hydraulic jacks reacting against ground anchors embedded beneath the bridges, Shows a number of failure modes, for example, collapse of a mechanism, three-hinge snap-through and compressive failure through crushing of the arch ring. Also shows the partial collapse of Bargower bridge and the full scale model of a brick bridge with a two arch which failed as a mechanism.
