Face Values. Part 7: Body and Soul
- Synopsis
- The series attempts to present social anthropology to a wide audience and aims to show the basic similarities between people of different cultures and to suggest, through the deployment of material from Britain, that anthropological concerns apply as much to ‘ourselves’ as to other peoples. This film observes that in all human societies there are rituals which are hard for an outsider to understand: in fact, many of us do not understand our own ritual symbolism. Shows a Chalon Arang dance performance, an important part of the ceremony which marks the end of the Balinese year. On Chole Island the way in which ritual behaviour often reverses that of daily life is discussed, looking at spirit possession and shamanism. This is related to Pentecostal religion in the West. *RAI
