Face Values. Part 6: The Common Bond
- Synopsis
- The series attempts to present social anthropology to a wide audience and aims to show the basic similarities between people of different cultures and to suggest, through the deployment of material from Britain, that anthropological concerns apply as much to ‘ourselves’ as to other peoples.
This film takes three societies - a Gaelic-speaking village in central Scotland, the Kayapo of central Brazil and a village in Malta, to illustrate the theme of ‘the common bond’ - and examines the way in which the ceremonies and rituals which punctuate the everyday life of all societies function to reinforce social and cultural identity. Shows a ‘flambos’ New Year ceremony in Scotland, a Kayapo ceremony in which the meat of a jaguar is eaten by young, not fully initiated boys, and preparations for an Easter Festival in Malta. *RAI - Language
