Face Values. Part 4: Everything in Its Place

Synopsis
The series attempts to present social anthropology to a wide audience and aims to show the basic similarities between people of different cultures and to suggest, through the deployment of material from Britain, that anthropological concerns apply as much to ‘ourselves’ as to other peoples.
Contrasts ideas of privacy of British campers with California gypsies. Male/female division is illustrated by a sceneon Chole Island where women are shown carrying out domestic tasks at the back of the houses, whilst men occupy a space out front on the verandah where they discuss matters of interest to the community. Drawing boundaries is seen to be a universal human occupation. Further examples are drawn from religious practice on Malta and Bali. Shows relevant aspects of the Catholic Church in Malta, whereas on Bali the divisions are ones of orientation between east and west, north and south, high and low - height and holiness being synonymous. Shows various ceremonies and rituals. *RAI
