Face Values. Part 3: The Human Frame
- Synopsis
- The series attempts to present social anthropology to a wide audience and aims to show the basic similarities between people of different cultures and to suggest, through the deployment of material from Britain, that anthropological concerns apply as much to ‘ourselves’ as to other peoples.
This film discusses the way the human body is used to convey ideas about society as well as ideas about ritual purity and pollution. The first part of the film deals with the way hair is displayed in Malta, on Chole and in gypsy society, discussing attitudes towards the body and health in contemporary Britain. The second part looks at ideas of ritual purity among Californian gypsies in greater detail. *RAI - Language
