Examination of the Newborn 1

Synopsis
Demonstrates the technique of examination of the newborn infant, including the preliminary assessment that is carried out immediately after delivery, and the more detailed examination that is performed subsequently. Minor abnormalities are discussed and illustrated by still pictures. These include birth trauma and moulding, abnormalities of the ears, eyes, mouth, limbs and genitalia, and skin lesions. Major abnormalities are not demonstrated or discussed in detail, but emphasis is placed on the more common and less serious conditions that are encountered. Stress is placed on the doctors responsibility to explain to the parents the findings of the examination and to discuss any anxieties that they may have.
