Synopsis
Illustrates the evolution of the vertebrate limb, from the earliest appearance of lateral fins in fishes to the variety of limbs in modern tetrapods. Evidence for each stage of development is considered. Comparisons of morphology, physiology and locomotion are made between significant groups of modern animals and their ancestral types.*
