Epidemiology of Dental Caries

Synopsis
The structure of a tooth, the nature of plaque and the development of caries is described. Two indices for measuring dental decay, the decayed missing and filled teeth index and the D M & F surfaces index are introduced. As a prelude to obtaining a DFMS score the adult dentition is described along with a suitable chart. A patient’s mouth is then examined and his dentition charted. A series of carious teeth are looked at in closeup. The tape concludes with an example of how a DFMS score was used to determine the effectiveness of fluoride treatment of children’s teeth.
