Epidemiology of Carcinoma in Situ of the Cervix

Synopsis
Is death from squamous carcinoma of the cervix preventable? This presentation describes how squamous carcinoma is usually, if not always, preceded by a pre-cancerous lesion, carcinoma in situ, and explains how regular screening by cervical cytology will reduce the morbidity and mortality from this disease. An explanation is also given of how normal cervical columnar epithelium is transformed to normal squamous epithelium by metaplasia, a physiological process which occurs to a greater or lesser degree in all women, and how metaplasia can be affected by Herpes Virus Hominis type II or sperm in such a way that carcinoma in situ, rather than normal squamous epithelium may be produced.
