Alternative title
Palettes: The Virgin, St Anne and the Infant Jesus, C.1500-15: Leonardo Da Vinci (1452-1519)
Synopsis
Discusses Leonardo da Vinci’s ‘The Virgin and Child with Saint Anne’ (c1510), in terms of the painting itself, the painter, and a palette of colour: pigment, composition and light effects. The figures of the Virgin and Child with St Anne are locked together in a pyramidal composition whose geometry expresses the complex relationship between them. The two women are said to represent the artist’s natural and adopted mothers.
